It iswith great pleasure that we have been able tore-encounter The Merchant of Yonkers anddiscover just how much the success of TheMatchmaker owes this earlier version of the play. But more oftenthan not, I think, plays deserve a second chance. The Matchmaker got that second chance, and weare so much the richer for it. The Thornton Wilder comedy that ended the opening week of the Stratford season on Saturday night provides sheer delight, absolute bliss, boundless merriment and heartfelt joy. A grumpy old merchant named Horace Vandegelder seeks a wife, his clerks crave adventure, a pair of young women are looking for love and a wise, witty lady sees that it all happens in the course of one madcap day.

His work in recent years as the stager of a wide variety of small, serious Canadian plays has given him a fine reputation, but it took Des McAnuff to decide Abraham could tackle the notoriously tricky Festival stage and do so with a play simply riddled with potential booby traps. His farcical set pieces are wonders of comic timing, his overall sense of narrative flow is exhilarating and — best of all — he understands the warm heart beating strongly underneath the play. What makes this show sparkle is the fact that even the smallest roles are played by the likes of Jon Vickery, Chick Reid, Robert King, Brian Tree and Victor Dolhai, each and every one of them giving full comic value to their moments in the sun.

But McKenna, as you might expect, is far too smart to go down that path. You can see her plotting the strategies that will lead to her getting just what she wants and the workings of her mind are a marvel to watch. Andrea Runge is deliciously ditzy as her sidekick, Minnie Fay. Praise them all and praise Santo Loquasto for a spectacular quartet of sets, the likes of which only Stratford can provide.
