The Sudbury Heritage Digital Alliances Project will provide digitized reproductions of historical photographs, artifacts or documents with bilingual records for some of the collections. All of the partners in the project have in their possession, collections of historical local significance. The Sudbury Heritage Digital Alliances Project will electronically unite the collections through a single automated library system.

This project will have provincial significance in that, it will make rare materials of the Sudbury area readily available to actual and potential users throughout Ontario. The digitization project, lasting one year, will provide the partners with hands-on experience and the opportunity to establish new and innovative digital services to the users of museums and libraries throughout the region and province.

Once the digital alliances are established, we will extend an invitation to other libraries, museums and organizations in the Sudbury area to digitize their historical artifacts, photographs and documents. We will then seek other federal and provincial partnerships.

Partner Participation. The Sudbury Heritage Digital Alliances Project, established in partnership with two public libraries, four museums in three municipalities, will digitize its collections of historical photographs, artifacts and documents and mount imagery content on the web in order to enhance accessibility.

By combining and digitizing collections of local importance and making them available through the Millennium Library System, all citizens will have access to the wealth of resources of our Northern libraries and museums. The effectiveness of the Sudbury Heritage Digital Alliances Project will be measured by the number of hits to the Millennium Library System catalogue as well as by the number of public requests stemming from the digital resources made available through the project. Each Spring, libraries and museums are inundated with requests by Heritage Fair students from all levels, for information, images and artifacts on various local topics.

They will now be able access information files directly through the Millennium Library System. We will also ensure a cross-promotion link of photographs and artifacts to the originating museum sites. One of the outcomes of the Sudbury Heritage Digital Alliances Project will be the establishment of new and innovative digital library and museum services that can serve as a model to Ontario libraries.

As the public discovers our site and uncovers the wealth of information available, we expect that individuals will come forth to donate their family photos, some of which may be treasures of our founding families or businesses.
