We didn't want to drive the same route back after we drove from Sydney to visit Fortress Louisbourg, and we thought Glace Bay might be quaint, so we returned via Highway But the road is obviously has not been a priority, it seems, since the Marconi period and while there are good sections, there are lots of rough sections.

We would have second thoughts if we were driving our own car, given the lack of stellar attractions, but with a rented car, it wasn't a bad choice. Read more.

The displays were interesting enough, but the young female Parks Canada employee couldn't be less engaged. She was reading her book and barely looked up when we entered, not bothering to greet us or ask if we had any questions.

When we were there mid October, the small building was closed, but we did see the historic plaque and got information nonetheless. The site is a typical seaside area with nice cliffs and open space, so you can't go wrong if you're looking for a nice picnic spot weather permitting.

It looked like there was a bit of foundation of something on the grounds, but we wish there had been something of substance outside, like a radio mast or something, just animate the outdoors a bit. Glace Bay and the area around it is scenic enough, so if you are around for some reason, or are a telecommunications history buff, might be worth a stop in season.

The title pretty much says it all - not only was the building closed for the season, the information plaques outside were removed for preservation. Apparently, the winters can get pretty rough - the book "Thunderstruck" by Erik Larson gives a pretty good account of the conditions during Marconi's time there.

The book was the reason I visited the site. Christopher wrote a review Oct
